How does this compare to past societies (such as the Age of Enlightenment beginning in the late 1600's) which tried to squelch the discussion of unseen mysteries such as the laws of gravity and physics?

What can we learn from Paul's statement in 2 Corinthians 4:18 which says, "we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal."?
