Deliver us from evil

Only one Antidote

The desire to do evil separates us from God. With this terminal illness coursing through our veins we're on a collision course with fate: the permanent separation of our soul from God after death. With evil in our lives God cannot permit us to infect his perfectly holy Heaven.

Fortunately there is an antidote to this terminal illness of humanity. Just as God gave us free will to choose good or evil, he gave us a free choice to do something that would remove the consequence of evil from our lives.

Only one person -- Jesus of Nazareth -- has lived every moment of his existence without a single moment of sin. Only Jesus chose to fully honor God with everything. He demonstrated superhuman power, yet lived a life of humility and suffered willingly at the hands of men in order to provide the human race with an antidote to sin. He made it clear in his many teachings on the spiritual realm.

"I am the way, the truth, and the life.
No one comes to the father except through me."
(John 14:6)

Though some people are offended by this claim of exclusivity, the claim makes it clear that only through belief in Jesus can we can enjoy eternal joy in God's perfect heaven.

According to Jesus, the process is pretty simple. "You must be born of the spirit," he said, meaning that we must experience a spiritual rebirth, renewed through our faith in Jesus. At that moment, he becomes our substitute, restoring us to God.

This happens despite our rebellious nature because Jesus took our sins onto himself when he hung on the cross. By accepting what he did, we allow him to become our mediator between God and man. Though evil does not leave us completely, only then do we have the ability to reject evil desires in favor of God's will. Until then, we are slaves to evil impulses. Jesus said, "you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."

Offensive exclusivity?

Many people struggle with the issue of exclusivity as it relates to the Christian faith. The concept is offensive to many who believe that it's unfair of God to provide only one way to reach heaven.

Think about this for a moment. How can it be offensive to proclaim a solution to a problem? How many people would find it offensive if there were only one vaccine for a deadly disease like AIDS?

If someone hands you a rope when you're drowning do you complain about the type of rope or reach for it to save your life? Instead of concentrating on the number of ways to be redeemed from sin, we should be glad that God provided one sure way.
