Deliver us from evil
Name above all names: who is Jesus of Nazareth?

I received an e-mail from a woman who said, "I asked Jesus Christ to control my life, and I believe that Jesus died for my sins, but how can I be sure that Jesus is God?"

Her question is typical of today's confused views about Jesus Christ. In the past few sessions, we've explored a number of reasons why we can trust the Bible as the perfect, inspired Word of God. Now we come to the focal point of all this effort. What is the world really attacking? And what is the Bible really all about?

Interestingly enough, both issues have exactly the same answer. Jesus of Nazareth. Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Prince of Peace. The Lamb of God. Messiah. The world is desperately attempting to turn attention and credibility away from Jesus. The Bible points directly to Him. This is the crux of the tremendous battle raging all around us in the invisible yet very real spiritual dimension. Jesus, the Name above all names.

So how can we know if the things the Bible says about Jesus are true? Is there actually any legal-historic evidence to support what the Bible says? Let's take a look at what has been found to date.

More than a Name

Jesus Christ is actually both a name and a title.

The name Jesus comes from the Greek form of the Jewish word Yeshua or "Jehova-Savior" (the LORD saves).

The title Christ comes from the Greek form of the Jewish word Mashiach or "Messiah" (Anointed One--see Daniel 9:26). The title actually refers to two offices of authority, King and Priest.
